I am a cultural sociologist studying how people pursue and make sense of social mobility. My dissertation examines the projected futures of students at hyper-elite universities in China. It identifies a cultural schema of competence central to understanding both the promise and the pitfalls of higher education in China, and analyzes how gender and class inequalities undergird students’ divergent relationships to merit and the meanings they attach to upward mobility.
I hold a PhD in Sociology from Harvard University.
